Nolan Bushnell talking without Experience...

"Nolan Bushnell Says Today's Video Games are 'Unadulterated Trash'

Video game veteran Nolan Bushnell said in a recent interview that video games today are in "a race to the bottom." He believes that most games are isolating and are missing the important social element. More within...

Atari founder Nolan Bushnell has never been afraid to speak his mind. In a recent interview with Electronic Design, the 'father of electronic games' said he is sorely disappointed with the direction the video game industry has taken in recent years. He believes most of today's games are pure garbage.

"Video games today are a race to the bottom. They are pure, unadulterated trash and I'm sad for that," he said.

As the founder of Chuck E. Cheese, Bushnell is now looking to create a wholesome family gaming experience at his uWink restaurant chain, where he will offer tabletop games to people who come in to eat. Despite the online revolution, Xbox Live, massively multiplayer games, and more, Bushnell believes that most games today still lack the social element.

"Social games represent something that has been missing," he commented. "Most of the board games are purchased by women for families. It is this gaming world that can be re-energized. We used to have families sit down and play a game together.

"A lot of video games today are very isolated. You don't see mom and dad, sister and brother, sitting down like they used to play, say, Monopoly. That represented good mentoring time for families that just isn't happening now."

So where has Nolan been isolating himself lately? Dropping out of Atari way back when didn't exactly benefit anyone. Being that he is still more interested in food service than video game development. He should probably keep his mouth shut.
