STEEP Snow Party Part 1(XBOX ONE)

Resident Evil 7 Collector’s Edition Unboxing(Exclusive to Gamestop)

They want $180.00 for this thing.  You know what the first thing I thought when they unboxed it.

       “Wow, it’s a lot smaller than I thought…”(that’s what she said)…

Even though it lights up and plays music; I think you are paying $180 for a premium collectible that probably cost Capcom and the company who made it about $180 to design.  After that, they are just collecting all that money right off the top of your $60 game purchase.  To say NOTHING of how much Gamestop made out of this deal.  It would be a great piece if it was MUCH cheaper.  Like half the price, especially because most people will unbox this once and put it in a corner and never touch it again.  Just like SO MANY OTHER collector’s editions; it’s REALLY not worth the price you pay for it or any where near the price you pay for it.  I definitely think it is one of the better of the useless, over priced collector’s editions out there.  But certainly not worth buying, no matter how much you love Resident Evil.

Call of Duty Infinite Warfare Review(PS4)

Call of Duty Infinite Warfare

Activision, Infinity Ward

PS4,XBOXONE,PC

3/5 Stars

This review has been a long time in coming.  I’ve had a hard time deciding whether or not I’m in a objective enough position to review this game.  But because I’ve been unable to handle the content of the game in the way in which I would like  I decided this was the best way of handling it.  I didn’t want to exactly advertise for this game considering how much Activision seemed against me doing so.  But I decided I did have something to say about the game and I wasn’t willing to just let it go.  So, here we go…

The Campaign(Or Why I’m writing this FREAKING REVIEW)

The campaign for Call of Duty Infinite Warfare is AMAZING.  The depth and complexity of the different things you can do in this game’s campaign is amazing.  It’s not necessarily amazing for games in general but for Call of Duty it was the richest most interesting campaign that I’ve ever played in Call of Duty.  The best parts of the campaign are those that you play in the Jackal.  It’s space combat done right without over doing it.  Most people don’t “really” want 100% control of a space ship.  What they want is fun space combat.  Which is exactly what Call of Duty has done.  You can’t really crash and while you certainly can be destroyed it does take some doing.  The fun part are dog fights you get into.  You can spin the Jackal, you can ascend and descend.  You are given the illusion of complete control over the ship.  But in actuality you are only MOSTLY in control of the ship.  And that’s just fine.  I don’t want to do that much work in a Call of Duty campaign.

The rest of the campaign is split up in many different ways.  But there is very little laziness here from the developers.  They have definitely pushed the boundaries what they can do.  Even getting rid of load screens by VERY cleverly hiding them with everything from launching your ship into space to cutscenes.

With some wonderful performances from almost every voice actor associated with this game.  I was blown away by how amazing the game related a very sci-fi military story.  The story itself may be very derivative, the execution is first class.  This was only one of the many reasons why I really love this campaign and think it is definitely one of the best campaigns that came out this year and definitely the GREATEST CAMPAIGN OF THE FRANCHISE!

The Multiplayer(Or Oh GOD! Not again…)

I think I lost my copy of Call of Duty Infinite Warfare and ended up playing Black Ops 3 for some reason; then got them confused.  No, not really…  Actually, I say this because the two games multiplayer is SO similar that it is pretty hard to tell the two apart unless you are pretty familiar with the two.  I’m being a little reductive here.  But the hard and fast truth about the multiplayer here is that not much has changed here.  You can choose from a number of classes, which are like the heroes classes in Black Ops 3.  You can “craft” guns which basically means that now all your guns have skill trees.  Most of which you will either get from a drop box earned, or by spending real money to get said boxes.  So not too much of this changes the actual game except that some people might have a slight advantage over others if they have spent a bunch of money on loot boxes.  Which isn’t good, but it ultimately doesn’t matter too much in the end; if you play enough of it.

The lack of change is where I have most of my problems with this game.  The lack of ACTUALLY using zero gravity or the kind of environmental hazards that appear in the single player.  They are just using regular maps for the most part with a novelty here or there that doesn’t effect the actual gameplay.  There was no push to change the locomotion from Advanced Warfare, just replicating it and slapping a different label on it.  I know there is the problem esports to consider, but to not change practically anything really makes this seem to be the laziest version of the Call of Duty multiplayer yet.

Zombies Mode(Or Do People Actually Like this?)

I’ve played other Zombies Modes in past Call of Duty games.  But I don’t remember them being quite as boring or as monotonous as Space Land.  The game is similar to the others, but the powers that the in game cards grant you this time seem incredibly boring.  Also, the waiting room where you wait to respawn back into the game is almost worse than looking at a respawn waiting screen.  This is a call back to old arcade games, with small group of arcade and carnival style games for you to play in order for you take some time off of your respawn timer.  But as the game progresses and you die more, it becomes much like purgatory rather than paradise.  As the games become more of a chore rather than a fun distraction.  Also, while the 80s theme is cool, it is very one note and you will soon get tired of the one liners both visual and otherwise.

I really didn’t enjoy my time with it at all…

       So should I buy this?

Well, no…  At least not until the price drops significantly.  Call of Duty Infinite has the best single player campaign of the entire franchise.  But that’s all it has…  Unless, of course, you haven’t played the last two Call of Duty games then I would say, go ahead you will probably be in for a nice surprise.  But any fans of the series should definitely wait for a price drop.  Because the campaign alone really isn’t worth $60.

So Apparently Activision Doesn’t Want their Campaign Played Through on Youtube!

After having a video up on Youtube for all of 24 hours Activision calls issue with me monetizing the content.  They picked a random area of the video that was cinematic and had no talking and said that I could not monetize this video because of it.  Well considering the ENTIRE video except for the parts in which I speak glowingly about how much I LOVE the campaign are all owned by Activision I don’t really understand the problem.  Anyway, I guess THIS is the reason I haven’t seen any videos on the campaign on Youtube.  Because NO ONE who NEEDS to make money off their content will leave their content up if it cannot be monetized.  So I guess all the work I did on editing these videos has gone to waste and I have IMMEDIATELY stopped doing ANYTHING for this game.  I guess this is better for Activision.  Now I won’t be talking up the campaign or ANY PART of the game anymore.  Sorry to everyone who didn’t get to see this video.

We will just move on to the next game.  It’s too bad that REALLY the ONLY thing about Call of Duty Infinite Warfare worth playing is the part I can’t show, i.e. the Campaign.  I will remember this one Activision.  I just don’t see the reasoning.  But I definitely am not doing videos for free.  I know you aren’t making games for free either, so I guess you will understand.

Haven’t decided what’s next for the channel or the videos yet to come.  But don’t worry, I’m sure it won’t be long….

Overwatch Sombra Gameplay Trailer(PC, XBOX ONE, PS4)

So that Diablo 3 Announcement Everyone was Looking Forward to….(Announcement Trailer)(PC,XBOX ONE, PS4)(UPDATE)

:UPDATE:

According to Blizzard’s website, it seems the Necromancer will be part of an ADD-ON DLC PACK that will basically contain a few skins and extras along with the ability to UNLOCK the Necromancer as a playable character.  This is the first time that I’m familiar with, that Blizzard is doing anything like  this.  I guess THIS is how they are going to get money for Diablo 3.  This is taken from their site and I quote,”

Q: What will we get as part of the Rise of the Necromancer pack?

A: In addition to unlocking the Necromancer as a playable character, players will also receive an in-game pet, two additional character slots, two additional stash tabs (on PC), a portrait frame, pennant, banner, and banner sigil.”

   Also…

Q: Who will be able to play the Necromancer?

A: We’re still settling on final details, but the Necromancer will be available as part of the Rise of the Necromancer pack, set to release in 2017. Players will need both Diablo III and Reaper of Souls to access this content (or, in the case of console, the Ultimate Evil Edition on PlayStation 4 or Xbox One.”

So until we see the pricing here, I’m having a bit of a hard time with this.  This package seems very thin, but I can’t imagine it’s going to be less than $10.  Here’s hoping…  Also, a release date would be nice, unless it’s slated for Holiday 2017, then just keep it to yourselves for as long as possible.

The Necromancer comes as somewhat of a surprise, only somewhat due to the recent leak from a Blizzard Store Page.  But it was what was not announced that was a much bigger surprise.  This being no Diablo 4, no significant expansion of Diablo 3 Reaper of Souls.  Just not much at all.  Blizzard who has managed to have a steady monetary stream for every single game, except Diablo.  Has surprised us all again by not asking to, in the not too distant future buy something else for the game to keep programmers, artists, etc; working on the game.  I don’t know much about game development, but I know everyone has to get paid.  How are the Diablo 3 folks getting paid?  Are they working on multiple projects at once?  Is the work just not that difficult at this point with this engine that they only have to work part time on this and can devout the rest of their time to other franchises?  I don’t know but the announcements coming out of Blizzcon today did nothing to answer these questions.

Blizzard did announce: “The Darkening of Tristram” Event for Diablo 3 that is going on the PTR(Public Test Servers) next week.  Which will take players back to the first Diablo with a free update to Diablo 3.  Which considering it’s free, even if incredibly good won’t be a big departure from what we are playing now.  Won’t be calling back all the lapsed fans.  I feel like the Diablo Franchise needs a shot in the arm.  Something big to get fans excited about it again.   The seasons are great and I would never look a gift horse in the mouth but I’m starting worry that this franchise is being left to die just because there is no easy way to monetize it.  Making a standalone game every 4-6 years is expensive and with all the problems Diablo 3 had in it’s launch year I could definitely see why Blizzard doesn’t want to go through all that again.  With their top franchises at full profitability(World of Warcraft, Hearthstone, and Overwatch).  I can see where a game with no monetary stream would be considered undesirable.  The powers at be probably don’t think they NEED Diablo to be successful in order to have a thriving company/business.

But I will say that it would definitely make a lot of fans unhappy if things went that way.  I’m neither game developer nor marketer so I don’t how you put a SUCCESSFUL monetization stream into a game like Diablo.  But if it will help keep the lights on and butts in chairs; I think Blizzard should explore it anyway.  I love ALL of the Blizzard Franchises and to see this one moving slowly toward the fires of hell and obscurity is a real shame.  I just hope Blizzard is holding something back, maybe something they will show at Blizzcon 2017; that will not only prove me wrong but be what the Diablo Franchise needs to be relevant again in this new and exciting era of gaming we are slowing creeping toward.

Transformers Fall of Cybertron for PS4 and XBOX ONE Update!

So as it turns out the Transformers Fall of Cybertron title that was recently released for PS4 and XBOX ONE, was not a remaster.  Just a port from, what looks to be the PC.  This is what I suspected when the game was never announced because the first question any journalist would have asked would have been,

“Is this a remaster or a port?”

And this would have put them in a bad position.  So rather than doing that they just pushed it out and hoped everyone buys the game; then realizes that they didn’t do anything to it except bring it over from the PC and give the player access to all the online content.  Not worth $50. For the record, this game seems to ONLY be available digitally.  So it will either hit a rock bottom price during a PSN or XBOX LIVE sale or just stay at it’s regular price forever.  Needless to say, don’t buy it.

Dead Rising 10th Anniversary Trailer!(PS4, XBOXONE,PC)

This comes in right about the time we are going to start look at Dead Rising 4 for this holiday.  Also, there is a bundle on Playstation store with all three of these pieces of content for, I think $50.  Might want to check that out if you want all of it.  I’m really interested in how the PC version will be.  1080p, 60 Fps is fine for console.  But I’m hoping the PC version, will be able to bump those numbers up a little; if you have the rig for it.  I was never a big Dead Rising fan back in the day.  But I definitely got into Dead Rising 2, and Off the Record.  Both pretty good games.  I will be interested to hear what new fans think of the original game as it is quite unique in this day and age.

New Ride Episode 2(Forza Motorsport 6)(XBOX ONE)

Transformers Fall of Cybertron(2016) Comes out Today! For $50?

So this is weird.  Transformers Fall of Cybertron comes out today for PS4 and XBOX ONE.  Guess they were scared to do anything for PC after Marvel Ultimate Alliance.  But this is coming out for $50!  It does include all the multiplayer packs etc…  But this is the type of thing you could buy for last gen consoles for like $10.  And PC?  Well, I think it was around $8.00 or less on the last Steam sale.  So this better be remastered and have lots of great stuff in it or it’s just a crappy cash grab.  Which might be why no one knew about it until today.  I guess we will all find out soon enough.  Needless to say, don’t buy this until some outlets review it or at least look at it.  I will keep you folks posted if I find anything out.

DOOM Updates: Multiplayer Weeee

To be fair there is a little more.  But Doom’s multiplayer always seemed to me to be it’s weakest part.  This is just from playing the betas on console.  But I’ve kind of heard the same from other people who own it on PC as well.

Prey Official Gameplay Trailer

So Prey is looking more and more like Dead Space 2017. That’s fine…  Just looked like so much more than that at E3.  Perhaps we will find out more of substance next year.  So far, I’m in either way.

ABZU First Chapter Playthrough!

ABZU Reveiw

ABZU

PS4, PC

Giant Squid Games

5/5 Stars

ABZU is one of those games that cannot be easily described.  In my Youtube video I described ABZU as a exploration game.  Which it is, but there is more to it than that.  There are lots of secrets in ABZU.  The depths of which may or may not be apparent to the average person watching videos on Youtube, Twitch, etc…  The problem with this is that the game is not exactly a slow burn in all things.  It can take as long as you are willing to move.  But if you move straight to the end like an arrow; you will be missing almost all of the game.  I would venture that the faster you move through the game the less of the game you see.  I would say that the critical path, if you can say that there is ACTUALLY a critical path.  The game will probably obfuscate around 60% of itself.  If this is the kind of game you like, underwater exploration, make sure you do a through job of exploration.

If you don’t like underwater exploration then this game will probably be a pass for you.  There is something else in there of course.  But not enough for you to appreciate if you don’t like this sort of thing.  I really loved this part of the game myself.  I could have scarcely imagined a better game than the one Giant Squid put together here.  I really loved riding all of the large undersea life; the game gives you an incredible mix of control or lack there of in many cases.

ABZU does work as more than an undersea exploration game.  But without the exploration there really is very little point in playing.  It took me slightly less than two hours to complete the game.  Not finding all the secrets and not in some cases doing a very good job of exploration.  I will probably play 90% of the all the way through at least one more time to pick everything else up.  There is a chapter select once you finish the game, so you can move back through previous sections to get secrets and find anything else you might have missed.  Which considering I’m missing two hidden trophies, I’m guessing I missed something big.

By this point you can probably imagine that I REALLY like this game.  I would say that not only do I really love this game it is definitely in the top 5 of my games for this year.  I would say that you should buy the game for either PS4 or PC.  That’s about all I can say without unnecessarily spoiling anything for you.

Inside PS4 Reveal Trailer

So now everyone will get to play Inside.  I will still probably be picking this up eventually for the PC.  But that’s great.  I wonder how having time exclusives helps companies.  Because I don’t really think this did much, in this VERY short period of time for Microsoft.

GIT GUD Maximilian Dood’s Awesome New Show! First Two Episodes!

We Happy Few: Alpha, Means it’s NOT DONE!

Let me say right from the start that I have nothing to do with the development or marketing of We happy Few.  I have no contact with any entities associated with making or publishing this game.  But this is really getting out of hand.

This week Microsoft’s new early access program started(May God have Mercy on their souls).  In that we got a few games that are in EARLY ACCESS(this means they are not done).  One of these is We Happy Few which is still in early ALPHA.  Which means in this case that over 50% of the game is not finished or in the build that was sent out for people to play on XBOX LIVE and Steam.

Most game journalists, I would imagine, would be familiar with this concept as they do get preview builds of games and are shown such builds at trade shows(behind closed doors, no less).  But this week we had a glut of journalists decide that We Happy Few was not only not worth their time but was misleading it’s audience.  Really?  Because they aren’t showing a part of the game that they admit isn’t even included in the preview build?  Because their are problems with a game that probably won’t be launched for another year?  Really?  I would say that the only “problem” I have with the way that We Happy Few was handled was the fact that they want to charge for access to the early access part of the game.  You get to play a preview portion on XBOX but you must pay for any access on Steam.  But this is normal for Steam and apparently this is what Microsoft is trying to do on XBOX ONE.   So I can’t really criticize.

Most of the press haven’t played more than a few minutes of this game, not read anything more about it than the initial press release and written it off as some kind of failure.  This certainly doesn’t bode well for anyone else making a high profile Early Access title.  If I were a developer I would NEVER let my game be seen this early by press or public just because neither one seems to be able to handle it.

What I think is most ridiculous is only one person in the press, Jim Sterling(who is VERY ACQUINTED with Early Access games) was able to actually explain everything that was going on and that he was glad that they had so much time to fix the game before it actually came out.  I will post his video below.  He is a contributor to the game both monetarily and he does some voice acting for it.  Which I’m sure will keep his opinion from being taken seriously by most people.  Which it should!  He is certainly better informed and has a much better video than any other outlet.

It never ceases to amaze me what levels of laziness and unprofessionalism that can be reached by the current crop of video game coverage outlets.  These people literally have hundreds of thousands of people standing in line for their jobs and they treat said jobs as if they were doing an independent study class for high school.  Show up, do the least required of you and get out as early as possible.  Thanks…  I really appreciate all your hard work…

Oh yeah, Thank God for Jim Sterling….

The Valley Story Teaser(PS4/PC)

Fighting Games: Why they are never going to be as big as other genres of video games

The video above is what Maximilian Dood, who is a huge fighting game personality and pretty damn good at fighting games says about learning fighting games.  He is definitely speaking from a place of love for the genre and believe me I’ve been following him for years.  He LOVES fighting games.  But his answer to the question is the exact reason why most gamers will never really get into fighting games and casual gamers might try to get into a certain game; but they will quickly lose interest when they start consistently losing.

Most people think that this is just like Dark Souls or even something like Project Cars.  But it isn’t, sadly…  Because in a fighting game everyone is getting better, not just you.  Also, there is no story to follow and there isn’t clear path to getting better in fighting games.

In a fighting game, you are probably beginning at a disadvantage because there is a portion of the community that are getting the game early or even better are actually consulting on the game.  This is similar for every competitive genre except that those people make videos that if you don’t watch; you are at a disadvantage over all those people who did.  There are people who spend hours pounding on betas or demos to get better.  Most in the FGC(Fight Game Community) that would say the first week of a new fighting game is really the time to get in.  If you haven’t gotten in then, you are at such a disadvantage that you will probably be overwhelmed when you do actually go online.

On the other hand, the Overwatch closed alpha and beta were on for over a year before I was able to play the game. I am still having fun and I’m mildly competitive today; I have played the Overwatch virtually every day since it came out.  But that is more or less the same for any competitive online game with a descent sized community.  But it was pretty easy game to pick up after watching very few videos online, even after week one.

One could do the same thing with a fighting game however, and not be in that position(I did with Mortal Kombat X, Street Fighter V, and Injustice).  Why is this?  Lots of reasons, but that isn’t exactly the thrust of this article.  This is more an article about expectations…

After the ESPN showing of EVO 2016.  People are already saying, “Oh we have arrived.  Fighting games are going to blow up now!”

Sorry folks, no they aren’t…  Watching the best players in the world duke it out in beautiful full color, will not translate into millions of new fans.  This genre is so impenetrable, especially Street Fighter V; that all that it will take is someone to actually try the game for themselves and they will never want to play the game again.  Street Fighter V has one of the weakest single player modes in history and the survival mode is SO poorly designed that even seasoned members of the FGC have a running distaste for it.

I would say that, again if you want to get into a fighting game, you would be better off getting in when the new installment launches, but you will never be in the same position you will be in when starting a new shooter or MOBA.  Why?

To begin with, most fighting games pull elements from past installments and people who have played those past installments are going to be naturally better than those who have not.  And believe it or not, there really aren’t as many new people coming into a typical fighting game as the typical FPS.  For instance, I’m not exactly great at Call of Duty but for the first 3 months and for the first 40-60 XP levels I am pretty damn competitive and that is because we are talking about tens of MILLIONS of people.  This is because the game itself is simpler than the typical fighting game.  Point at the bad guys and shoot them by pulling the trigger on your game pad.  And that’s the essence…

I would never say that Call of Duty, Halo, DOTA 2, League of Legends, etc…  Are not difficult at high levels.  But what I am saying is that on a casual, learning level, people can more easily pick them up and understand them.  Even if we set aside execution concerns, most of the popular esports games are much easier to get into than the typical fighting game.

I love fighting games, but I will never be as competitive in them as games like Heroes of the Storm or Overwatch.  This is because I don’t have unlimited time and patience.  I also, don’t have someone to play with in offline games to get much better.  This is another reason why fighting games are so hard for the average casual person to get into.  Because you have to have someone just a little better than you to play with on a regular basis.  Because unlike most of the super popular games out there.  Fighting games require not only practice of things like execution but match ups and learning patterns of other people’s play in order to understand your opponents.  You will also probably need a really good monitor with low refresh rate and most people will probably need a fight stick which will probably cost you around $200(the fightstick, the monitor will be another $150 or so).

Even after watching hundreds of hours of video of the best players in the world; this will probably not help you very much when it comes to fighting people on your level.  Because, they won’t be playing that way.  They will be playing a crazy random strategy that you won’t be able to figure out either.

So you crazy FGC people, I love you.  But let’s get real here.  It’s going to take a lot more than ESPN to help us fix all our problems.  Perhaps, Capcom could help with that.  Maybe…

I would love to hear what you think about this.  Please send me some feedback on twitter @timothypecoraro or send me an email at hadestimes@gmail.com

Games with Gold for August Announced!

I sometimes wonder if Microsoft puts games on Games with Gold based on their sales.  Because I don’t think Spelunky or Beyond Good and Evil HD have sold AT ALL in probably at least two years.  The XBOX ONE games, well, if you like Dynasty Warriors…  Or wrestling and you don’t have either one of those games, GREAT!  Otherwise, they are probably worth what we are paying for them; Nothing…

But good on MIcrosoft for not spamming us with more indie games from three years ago on XBOX ONE and calling them the main games for the month.  Now we just have to get through the bargain bin and we will be golden…

Some Overwatch Play (Kind of Old now)

Hope to put this sort of thing up every once in a while.  I’m Devilsalias btw, I didn’t mention that in the video.

Street Fighter V’s Juri will be Releasing by the End of July!

According to Capcom’s own Yoshinori Ono, Juri will be releasing by the end of July(read July 29th).  But how different will she be from what we’ve already played.  I would expect not too different.  Probably some of her frame data will change and perhaps some of the damage on her moves will be adjusted one way or another.  But overall, I’m thinking we have already seen what we can expect from the final release of her.  I am a big Juri fan and have not really taken to any of the Street Fighter V roster so far.  So I’m really hoping this is my way in.  As I will more likely stick with a character if he/she is someone I really like.  I’ve played ALOT of Juri in Street Fighter IV.  She isn’t radically different but the mindset in playing her is definitely a little different.  At least as far as I could tell from story mode.  Can’t wait to see when she drops in the end of the month.

Broken Age Review/Let’s Play Thing… Yeah, we need to work on this(Backlog)

The Backlog: Apotheon Review

So, this is Backlog.  It’s a new feature that basically consists of me going through my PS4 library and play games that I either purchased or got for free but never played or never played very much.  I’m going to play the games either all the way through or as in this case, as far as I can stand it.  So here we go…

Apotheon is a pretty good game, if it wasn’t so boring.  The game is set in an alternate Ancient Greece.  Where the Gods have abandoned humanity and have left them to their own devices.  It’s a pretty similar story to God of War without the action and gore.  The game mostly consists of fetch quests.  Other than that the platforming is annoying and the actual fighting is little more than an annoyance.  I basically hated the game.  And I had to do two over one hours sessions to capture game play.  Only to find out my capture device screwed up the first one.  So I put this back through the PS4 to get the footage.  Which is why I didn’t have any voice over for the game.  This is literally my first attempt at doing something like this.  But never fear I’ve worked out my technical problems and we will be all good come the next game.  Promise.  Anyway, if you haven’t bought Apotheon, for PS4 or PC.  Just don’t it’s not worth your time.  It wasn’t even worth the two hours I spent on it.

Wow, Man Thought you Died or Something!!!

So this is going to be a little akward.  It’s been quite a while since I was working on this site and even longer since I’ve done any active work for this site.  So I decided to give you all a bit of a warning.  I”m back.  I have a ton of new plans for this site and it involves Patreon, Youtube, and finally Twitch.  So people this is just the beginning!  Don’t worry this time, it’s for real! Be afraid!!!!
