Nintendo Chronicles: Why I Have A Switch and Why I’m Writing about Nintendo

I’m using a picture from the Wii era of Nintendo, in fact the pre-Wii era as it was the from Nintendo E3 Press Conference at which they announced the Wii.  But moving on, I’m using this because this was the last time I owned a Nintendo Product.  I bought a Wii and then well…  I was done.  I have purchased MANY consoles since then, including the a replacement PS3, PS4, and an XBOX ONE.  In fact, all that the Wii did for me was solidify that I WAS NOT and probably NEVER would be a Nintendo fan.

Also, I would say that it solidified for me that the things that Nintendo did wrong were things that I just couldn’t handle.  I hated motion controls, low powered consoles that could be used as Bunsen burners, and so few game releases every year that they gave Destiny a run for their money in the lack of new content department.

But that WAS back in 2005.  How things have changed over the years?  Well… Some things anyway…

It is now, the year of our lord 2017.  Wow, time sure flies…  Anyway, things have significantly changed, mostly.  This year has been the greatest year for video games since 2006 and perhaps will surpass that year as well by the end.  There have been SO MANY good to great titles coming out this year that one can hardly keep up.  In fact, most people can’t.

Strangely to me, perhaps not to others; but to me.  Nintendo has been a big part of that.  Even these days with their draconian video sharing policies, their insistence that this Internet thing is just a fad and is not worth investing in.  And their desire to ignore all other technologies in the world that they themselves did not make or pioneer; To such a degree that they always seem to have multiple patient lawsuits pending against them at anyone time.

What we can count on Nintendo for, are the GAMES! And that really is all we can count on them for.

As a proud new owner of a Nintendo Switch(No, I won the console, I’m not buying a third console in a year so soaked in video games that we will probably all drown by the end).  I can say that the games are REALLY the only thing this little revolution has going for it.  The screen is very low resolution(720p), the GPU and CPU might be as strong as a PS3, maybe?  And connecting this device to a television does get you an upscaled 1080p resolution at 30 fps! Wow, how 2005 of you Nintendo.  Of course, this is the first console in history that can be a handheld or a home console.  I just wish it was a master of one and not a jack of all trades.

The console gets incredibly hot when docked and running a game for more than an hour.  It gets SO HOT that some people have reported the plastic shell of the device warping.  Wow, I would have never seen that coming and I don’t even have an engineering degree or anything….  Perhaps some more testing would have been in order there?

There is no way to natively from the console voice chat.  You must use a cellphone app.  Which works so badly that it isn’t even worth calling a “solution.”

You must plug in your headphones, because the console doesn’t support bluetooth.  Which is an interesting feature to omit in 2017, in a consumer electronic device that comes from Japan….

The console feels so fragile in the hands that you honestly can’t figure out who this device was made for.  It looks like it was made for a five year old.  But a very cautious one, because dropping this thing from a foot off the ground would probably destroy the connected joy con controllers.  There is a premium on metal here that seems very strange.  If I made a device like this I would have either used a very high gauge plastic or some more metal.  Everything seems like with little effort you could just snap it in half.  Unlike all the other consoles that Nintendo has made that when not being used could function as doorstops; they were so durable.

I know when I brought all of you here with my title you probably didn’t think I was going to complain the whole time.  So I won’t.  I LOVE the NINTENDO GAMES on the SWITCH.  Yes, ladies and gents the thing that most companies seem to struggle with; continued quality of game titles.  Nintendo has had no trouble with.  Also, they continue to build their library of games this year at an incredible pace.  It still is not that of console makers that have total third party support.  But it is FAR BETTER than anything Nintendo has been able to do in years past.

With my console I got Splatoon 2.  Once I got used to the controls I absolutely loved being both kid and squid.  The game is some fun on the handheld, but connect that to a large screen TV and you are in heaven.  Using the pro controller I have found endless hours of fun in this mostly online third person shooter.  And honestly I haven’t been able to say that since Gears of War 3.(Sorry Gears 4, you lost me).   This game is amazing and having played now for a handful of hours.  It is indeed the multiplayer that keeps me coming back and NOT the single player.  While the single player is good, with good dialogue and some cool bosses.  It cannot hold a candle to the fast paced action of the multiplayer.

Splatoon 2, is not a “new release.”  It came out back in July and while it seems like there still is large group of people both playing it for the first time or continuing to play.  It isn’t exactly League of Legends or Destiny 2.  But no matter how many Regular Matches I compete in, I have this feeling of satisfaction.  Which cannot be matched or equated with any other game.  I know this sounds hyperbolic.  But I think Splatoon 2 is best multiplayer 3rd person Shooter I’ve ever played.  Even if it is one of the most simplistic.

I think that is what is great about Nintendo; perhaps what has ALWAYS been great about Nintendo.  Gameplay is KING.  No matter, how you get there, that is what you’ve come for.  It isn’t the motion controls, graphics, or convenience of play.  It’s GAMEPLAY and that’s it!

Honestly, I would love to make a demontized video series about my experiences with my new Switch.  I’m just worried that since I’m not in the Nintendo Creator Club that my videos will be forced down by Nintendo.  So anyone who knows anything about this sort of thing please hit me up on Twitter, and let me know if my worries are unfounded.  Also, as this is MY article, please hit me up on Youtube and watch all my videos that have been demonitized and aren’t about Nintendo or the Switch.

So whether, I will return here in written format or come back with a link to my wonderful Youtube series.  Please check back later for my continuing adventures with the Nintendo Switch.  I will probably be writing reviews of the new games as they come.  I’m only going to be reviewing Switch EXCLUSIVE titles however.  Not just anything that pops up on the ESHOP or comes out for the Switch.  I’m looking at you DOOM!

When I woke up this morning I thought I had a day off. Then this happened…(Friday the 13th the Game)

So I was low to give this video from Gamespot more views but it seemed like too much of an integral part of this story to not do so.  Gamespot, for their part, at the time of this writing has buried the video on their site somewhere that I was unable to find it.  So I guess that’s how much they value it.  Anyway, it was done by Peter Brown, who is a veteran staff member of the site and has been around since a time before the XBOX 360 was out.  Which these days is considered a very long run at a particular site.  He is usually a very logical and knowledgeable reviewer and journo so why this uninformed thing came from him is anyone’s guess.

But it does speak to the growing void between game journalists and influencers.  I use influencers here as the industry term not to sound trendy, because as some one who would like to be an influencer I find the term more than a little annoying and erroneous as it really doesn’t mean what it sounds like it does.  But that is definitely a story for another day.

In this article I would like to discuss why after 12 matches(maybe a little more or a little less) Gamespot decided to do a video on an early access game called Friday the 13th the Game and slam it.  Which make no mistake that is what they are doing.

Most early access games get an unreasonable amount of consideration.  Most previews say only positive things and in most cases the axiom of,”if you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all.”  Applies in almost every case.  Few reviewers or journos bother to step into the muddy waters of early access/preview content build/unfinished games; and if they do it is usually because they want to show something off that they discovered and it gives them a special feeling.  So that is why this video from Gamespot seemed so strange to me.

The video touched on a lot of points that to me seemed a little off.  I will review some of them now:

The game’s facial animations are bad.  We don’t know if this on purpose or not but they are.

(OK, well you work at one of three biggest game media content providers in the US perhaps you could call the devs and ask.)

The game has a lot of bugs, most of them aren’t game breaking but they are there.

(WOW a game that ISN’T out yet has bugs! Astonishing!)

It really sucks that you have to stay and watch the rest of the game if you die early to get your XP.

(Well first, get good, second, this isn’t PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds! You are supposed to be playing with friends and helping the rest of your team get through the match.  Were you guys even on voice chat?  Because chatting during, before, and after the game is kind of the point.)

We have only played 12 matches, so hopefully we will get better and not have so much down time between actually playing the game.

(Yeah or maybe you shouldn’t rush to judgment after only playing 12 matches.)

The same cutscene plays at the beginning each match every single time.

(Yes, that’s true, consistency is good for multiplayer games, don’t you think?)

So I know it does appear that I’m picking on Mr. Brown here.  But I am simply explaining that for someone who is at least some what knowledgeable about the game most of these issues are easily explained away.  Also, for someone who has been in the business as long as he has it is hard to understand why he makes some of the statements he does about the game.

You might be asking how I got so smart about the this game or why I even care.  Well, first I’ve been watching this game on Youtube and Twitch since the beta test which was a ways back.  Recently some folks that are both backers and influencers managed to get a few copies of the games ahead of it’s soft launch and I was able to watch about 5 hours of gameplay.  Probably saw at least 50 or so matches.  I’m also a big fan of games like Dead by Deadlight which are in the same vein as this game.  I also found it interesting that Peter Brown did not once mention Dead by Daylight as it is the most easy comparison to a game that is already out.  If you’re interested here is an example of an incredible match of Friday the 13th the Game from one of the Youtubers I mentioned.

Centertrain01 has been around for quite a while himself and has a following of around 200,000+ subscribers on Youtube.  He mostly plays Stealth games but he was a backer for this game and was excited about the horror theme.  Certainly this is not exactly his wheel house, although stealth is important in the game.  He is with a team of other youtubers/influencers who got the game early either because they were influential or because they were backers; or both.  He also has an over 5 hour live stream recorded on Youtube if you are interested in that.

This person certainly proves my point about the difference between what seems to be an ever growing apathy by game journalists in a world where streamers, youtubers, and others work tirelessly to communicate with their fans.  Often it seems like while a youtuber/influencer/content creator might know your screen name.  The game journalist is likely not to even bother to look at their audience, comments, or even their twitter.  As they are all TOO TOXIC.  Well, I can’t say that the influencers have it any better than you folks and are paid far less for their trouble.

Many game journalists who work at big outlets will bring out the old chestnut that the game industry is SO BIG and that there are SO MANY GAMES coming out that they can’t cover all of them.  So that is why they are uninformed or miss the boat when it comes to trends or current events in the gaming community.  My response then is, perhaps you shouldn’t cover television, movies, and video games.  If you can’t really handle any of them, because the industries are so big and there SO MANY TV shows, movies, and video games are coming out all the time.  There are plenty of youtubers/influencers that have far few people working for them that seem to cover just as much.  But they also work a lot harder than anyone with a 9 to 5 job that only works 5 days a week and gets EVERY SINGLE HOLIDAY off.

The lack of personality in the big media outlets is a major warning sign that their day has come and gone.  While there have certainly been a ALOT of shake ups to influencers over the past year.  These people are still the ones driving the industry.  The IGNs and Gamespots of the world might have more traffic(not always).  But their influence is much closer to that of the mainstream media among the hardcore fans and tastemakers of the industry.  IGN, Gamespot, and Giant Bomb were late to the party on the last few trends that arose in the game community and I’m sure with Gamespot’s current outlook on Friday the 13th the Game.  This will be no exception, as over the preview period for the game it was the #1 watched game on Twitch; even over League of Legends.  That means that you need to more than a passing attention to it.  You know, like PlayerUnkown’s Battlegrounds….

Breaking! Hitman is Probably going to be OK!

Hey does anyone else think Square Enix is poorly managing their studios financially and have been since the first Tomb Raider? And how can some projects be allowed to wallow in development hell and soak up all the money while others get cut even after they are released and perform?

Marvel Heroes Omega Official Announce Trailer(XBOX ONE, PS4)

Injustice 2: Introducing Captain Cold!(PS4,XBOX ONE)

Persona 5’s Lack of Male/Female Character Choice apparently a Problem for some…

Recently in an article by Polygon where they quote an interview done by Waypoint there seems to be an issue with the fact that in the most recent Persona game by Atlus that the player is unable to choose between a male/female character at the start.  The reason for this is stated by Katsura Hashino the game’s director.

“With the way that game's world worked, it was okay for the protagonist to be female. With Persona 4, though, we needed the character to come from a big city to a small country town to be the driving force of the story, and it seemed more natural for a male character to fulfill that role. There are story aspects to this decision, as well.”

Also mentioned is that it would have been a lot more work to have created the option to play as a female character. Because many of the aspects of the game would needed to be added to and enhanced.  I’m also wondering about the main catalyst of the story.  A student from a rural town who stops the harassment of a young woman by a politician.  This certainly would have been a much different set of circumstances if the student were female and hopefully the reactions to it by the surrounding adults would have been different.  But perhaps I’m trying to put too much reality into Persona’s fantasy.  In any case, I think this boils down to getting the game done on time(Which Atlus had ALOT of trouble doing), some Japanese cultural bias toward male main characters, and what Katsura Hashino did mention.

In it’s current state, I believe Persona 5 to be a very good game(Atleast as much of it as I’ve played).  And this feels a little like media piling on to game with some controversy already surrounding it due to a COMPELTELY unrelated issue.  I think we should just give Atlus a break, they made a great game.  Let’s leave it at that.  Unless you want to start asking Nintendo why we can’t play as Zelda in Legend of the Zelda Breath of the Wild?
