PS3 Mod tools for the PC are out now for Unreal Tournament 3

You can head over and download the tools from here. Make sure you have patch 1.1 installed. Considering how big a deal this is, the information is kind of hard to find!

Epic, what is going on with UT 3?

According to the Unreal Tournaments Forum FAQ:
"UT3 can run on PCs, PS3, and XBox360. Can I create a server on a PC that can be used to host games for PS3 and/or XBox360 players?
- Per Epic Games, "Hi all. PS3 servers require being run on PS3s. Epic is putting up a bunch of PS3 [dedicated servers], but the console universe traditionally is listen servers." -Jeff Morris 11/28/07"

But

"
Server browsing is similar to the PC, with the ability to filter by various game options. You can specify whether you want to restrict your choices to dedicated servers. When creating a multiplayer game, you can choose to host as a dedicated server, and dedicated PS3 servers can be run from PCs as well." Shacknews...

Which is only one example of where they say that the PC servers can host PS3 games. Considering these interviews were done in December and the FAQ is posted on the 28th of November it is kind of hard to believe it was a dropped feature. SO WHAT REALLY HAPPENED? I bought the PC version to make maps but considering there are STILL NO TOOLS to cook mods for the PS3 I guess I'll just fool with the PC mods until there are. Also the mouse support for the PS3 is borked!

This is the reason that people who own PS3s get so angry.... Please Epic release some statements about UT3 and please so that you REALLY support this title by coming out with a patch for the PS3 version and some better support for the dedicated server program.

Unreal Tournament 3 for the PS3! What's wrong with it?

I just don't get it. Full keyboard and mouse support, some customization options, and some of the best traditional FPS gameplay. You can even download mods and put them on your PS3 to play from the PC version. So what the HELL is wrong with it? Why isn't anyone playing. It's practically impossible to find a lag free game. Unreal Tournament 3 would probably be the best FPS out there if there were just more people playing. I guess I could pick up the PC version because I was going to anyway to make mods. But since my PS3 is graphically better than my PC I was hoping to mostly play on there. Even with the controller the game is fun. Come on guys! Play some Unreal Tournament 3!

[UPDATE] December 27th 2007... There are some Midway Dedicated Servers that have been added for the PS3. But I AM hoping to get the PC version soon. I REALLY look forward to making mods for the PS3 and the PC. I just hope the PS3 tools come out soon. The mouse side of the keyboard/mouse support seem to be a little sketchy but I'm sure it will be fixed soon. Playing with the controller is fun and on dedicated servers the game is incredibly fun.

Please folks, at the VERY LEAST pick up the game for the PS3 or the PC. I know you have a PC, your reading this. I have to say that this is one of the best FPSs I've ever played. I know there were tons of games out this holiday season, but this is one you shouldn't miss. Also, you know that in six months when there are hundreds of mods you'll REALLY want to buy it then. SO just pick it up now, use that gift card you got for Christmas.

Mod Tools not yet out for PS3 version of UT3.

"December 12, 2007 - If you've already purchased a copy of Epic's Unreal Tournament 3, you may have noticed you can't yet load in mods. Before users can actually start making mods work for PS3, Epic apparently needs to release special PS3 tools, which Epic producer Jeff Morris assures us will be available soon.

"By far the superior method of explaining this is that mod creators should begin creating mods," said Morris in an email. "Once the tools come out (they will be available soon) players can port them to the PS3, but since they'll work the same way on the PC as the PS3, creators should get busy! Additionally, there is always a delay between a UT game and when mods start to appear. PS3 is no different."

Jeff went on to explain, step-by-step, the process for transferring the mods from your PC to your PS3.

  • Save the PS3 folder (per mod) to your SD card (or USB drive).
  • Run UT3 on PS3
  • Insert SD card into PS3
  • Go to My Community User Content
  • Select Import Content
  • Import from the SD card"IGN...

This is all very understandable but the lack of advertising and the problems with PS3 game development on the whole makes this just another slap in the face to Sony. Also, Epic needs to get going on something for this game. There seems to be this general lack of interest and it was relatively hard to get the information above. Some people think that the PS3 game WON'T except mods ever. Which is wrong but the total silence out there just doesn't seem to be helping anyone.

PS3's New Firmware update makes it the King of all Media!

With the latest video additions in the 2.10 firmware update for the PS3 it has finally, a more than a year after launch. Has made the system the best choice for all your media consuming needs. No longer will you have a limited selection of videos to watch on your system and no longer will you have trouble streaming all the web shows you want to watch to your PS3. What I speak of, of course, is the addition of both WMV and Divx formats making the system compatible with everything but Quicktime. And what IS compatible with Quicktime other than Macs and iPods? So they have finally done what all PS3 owners have been waiting for. With Unreal Tournament 3 and custom wallpapers it is a BANNER month for the PS3. All we need now are custom soundtracks and the PS3 will inch passed the XBOX 360. But considering I watch all my movies on the PS3 I guess now I will play all my internet media there too. Thanks Sony!

Holy Release Dates! Unreal Tournament 3 due out in December!

"My guess is that Midway will start shipping the title to North American retailers on Monday, December 10th," said Rein. "It could show up in stores as early as December 11th but more likely toward the middle of that week."Gamespot

This is amazing news! This game really had a snowballs chance and now for it to arrive on the estimated date that was given by retailers is wonderful... Prepare to frag this Christmas, an awesome first person shooter on PS3. Good to see yet another good game for the PS3 coming in 2007. Ratchet and Clank, Uncharted Drakes Fortune, and Call of Duty 4. Not much, but good enough....

OK, now the title of the Gamespot article is dealing with Unreal Tournament 3 still coming out this year. Well, it probably will. The last quoted date was December 12th. I'll hold out hope until then. If the game isn't out by then, I'm guessing it will be early January. But I'm sure all the technical issues associated with putting UT3 online is probably the main crux of the delay if there is one. As thrilled as I would be to see UT3 come out this year. I think it would be better if Epic waited and made the game perfect so that they make the biggest impact they can when the game actually launches.

Unreal Story is more Unreal than Planet Unreal knows!

This is from Planet Unreal's Preview of UT3."The PS3 version is indeed scheduled to be released shortly after the PC version, but it’s evident that this isn’t due to any sort of technical difficulty. A PS3 was up and running UT3 along side the PC’s, and it looked to be identical. The difference in release simply comes down to Epic’s desire to get UT3 in stores this November, and it was their choice to favor the loyal PC players first. A Xbox 360 version will come at some time, but specifically when we don’t know."
This is some insane news considering the supposed reason for the delay of the PS3 version IS technical difficulties. I really wonder what the heck is going on. Delaying a game perhaps until February because they want to give their loyal PC fans the game first. Seems a little insane. What this bolsters is the idea that perhaps the PS3 version will be out before the end of 2008.
I would really love to hear more form Epic Games about all this. Definitely would love to hear what the status of the PS3 and Pc versions are now that the demo is out. Also, was the demo simply to get tweaks taken care or to judge server load or what? For a game still scheduled to come out in less than 2 months it would be wonderful to see more information on the game.

Unreal Tournament 3 to out Halo 3, Halo 3!

The demo for Unreal Tournament 3 for the PC just went up today. I downloaded it on the slow and crazy Fileplanet severs and was playing around the time that the demo went active at 3 PM EST. I was probably playing by 3:30. I have an old PC, not in the biblical sense but in the technological sense. It is a single core 2.4 Ghz machine with 512 MB of RAM and a ATI card with 128 MB. I looked it up once a few weeks ago and the PC is worth around $300. The demo runs so smoothly and so quickly that all the reservations I had about buying this game are gone! When I get a new PC I can turn everything up and really enjoy the graphics. But all of the effects are on and a lot of the textures are on. The game runs SO FAST it's like I'm playing the Unreal Tournament 2 on this machine. I just pre-ordered the collector's edition so I can make maps for the PS3 game that is coming out early next year. If this game looks as good as it does on a high end PC and runs as fast as it does on my PC on the PS3. This will be my Game of the Year for 2008 for the PS3. I don't care what else comes out, nothing is going to trump this title.
I was so happy with the gameplay and the speed of the title that really nothing else mattered. The game looks good on my PC but nothing extraordinary. But what is extraordinary is how seamless it runs. There is no slowdown, no screen tearing, it all most runs better than Resistance on the PS3. It is amazing! I forgot how awesome the Unreal Engine 3 is. A game that can scale as much as this does, should be put in some kind of Hall of Fame. I had a tremendous time playing this game. I played both maps offered in my favorite single player Deathmatch. The weapons are awesome and have been tweaked to make them all work and make them all fun.
This will be the first game I've ever bought on the PC and the console. It will be the best $120.00 I've ever spent! If Epic and Midway need more time to get the PS3 version right; I say give them all the time they need. It will be worth it.
Oh yes, I was going to talk about Halo 3 wasn't I? Halo 3 is a great game. I believe I gave it an 8.5/10. The graphics are great and the multiplayer gameplay is one of the best ever. But if Unreal Tournament 3 came out on the PS3 this holiday season with the proper hype it would beat the living stuffing out of Halo 3. Fortunately for Microsoft and Bungie they have been given a reprieve. If there was a game that would be system seller for the PS3, this is the game to do it.
I've seen plenty of footage from the game's modes and the extensive multiplayer that absolutely nothing Halo 3 can offer to compete with it. There is a tool set that comes with Unreal Tournament 3 that will allow the player to create everything from new maps to new GAMES ALL TOGETHER! All of this certainly pales in comparison to the features that Halo 3 has. If the reviewers thought that Halo 3 was a great value. they haven't seen anything yet. The biggest question is what features will the XBOX 360 version of Unreal Tournament 3 have? Will it be stripped out version because of the closed network that is XBOX LIVE?
Just as I thought, though the game is probably doomed because Epic and Midway don't usually sink the money necessary to hype a game the way that Microsoft did. Obviously Sony isn't helping them very much either. This should be the flagship title for the PS3 and Sony doesn't seem to worried about the fact that it isn't coming out this holiday season. They have Haze after all... I'm sure Haze will do about as well as Blacksite Area 51. OK, but nothing special.
Unreal Tournament 3 should be bigger than Killzone 2. But the hype just hasn't been there. If Midway would put some money behind this title and get some commercials and maybe a hardcore gaming tournament, featuring Unreal Tournament 3 it might really help sales. Instead of assuming everyone knows how great UT3 is, maybe Midway, Sony, and Epic need to be sure people can't miss it.
Halo might be big, but Unreal was big before the XBOX even existed. With it's latest installment it could be the BIGGEST of all. XBOX 360 is the shooter platorm, Midway needs to push this game on to the 360 as soon as they can after the PS3. With the higher install base and the interests of that install base it is necessary. Whatever they need to do to fix everything so that games can be uploaded on to the 360 needs to be done. Whatever network sharing, hyperthreading, whatever needs to be done. It will be good practice for when new content comes out for the Orange Box later next year.
Microsoft needs to get a grip on this whole closed network thing and figure out how they can have a secure environment and a place for players and developers to share software and information. You know. the way they did with EA.
Until then, Halo 3 might be KING but the REVOLUTION IS COMING!

Unreal Engine 4 in development, I guess...

This was posted over at Voodoo Extreme and then over at Destructiod. I guess that makes it a few steps from true, but I wouldn't start looking to the future quite yet, folks...

Seems Unreal Engine doesn't like PS3 too much!

PS3fanboy reports," Underneath the depths of a crater-sized hole left from their earlier Unreal Tournament 3 PS3 delay, Midway CEO David Zucker also made a rather bold statement about Midway's future Unreal Engine-based PS3 releases. Citing "technical issues of the Unreal Engine 3.0" as the main culprit for the PS3 delays of Stranglehold, Area 51: Blacksite and of course, Unreal Tournament 3, the conference call also included the assurances these technical issues have since been worked out, barring PS3 delays for future multiplatform releases in 2008 and beyond.

Hmmm ... color PS3 fans bemused and slightly suspicious. After all, we're still left with a lingering sting from the triple whammy PS3 backhand they've dished out. If anything is certain, it's that death, taxes and occasional game delays are all but inevitable but we just hope Midway can stick to their guns to make one of those things, a thing of the past. Imagine ... no taxes! [Insert lolz here.]"

All so interesting, seems that the wonderful Cell processor seems more trouble than it's worth. I wonder if this means that Unreal Tourney 3 will only be marginally earlier on the PS3 than on the XBOX 360. I'm picking up the PC version and the PS3 version. I love making maps and playing on them. Unreal Tournament 2 was my favorite game back in the day. Can't wait.... Anyway, this shows that the PS3 still has some way to go before they are going to be able to compete on an even playing field with the XBOX 360.
