Looks like Halo 3 was good for hardware sales after all. It seems that all the analysts predictions about the PS3 sales skyrocketing aren't panning out. Also, considering the price cut for the PS3 won't show until November's NPD. Analysts say that the larger the install base of the XBOX 360 and PS3 will positively impact the whole industry as opposed to the Wii install base only favoring Nintendo. Sony's response to the lagging sales is basically that their share of the market is 619,000 compared with Xbox's 528,000 and Nintendo's 997,000 so they are still in second place. This is kind of sidestepping the question of Sony's problems with the PS3. But admitting that they have a problem is just not something that Sony is ever willing to do.

December, the Last issue of PSM, sort of....

The news that PSM is going the way of the dodo after this month isn't news. But what is news is that they are actually changing the name of the magazine to Playstation: The Official Magazine. Early this month it was announced that Future was bringing Playstation: The Official Magazine out to the US. What wasn't stated was that it is taking the place of PSM. My reviews of PSM have been unfavorable, but I don't think changing the name and maybe including a demo disk are really going to enhance the writing. At least Future isn't in fantasy land about the number of Sony magazines that this market will support. All the best to Future and their new prospects...

We don't like Wii better, it's just Cheap!

"Capcom managing corporate officer Katsuhiko Ichii explains why they jumped ship:
Due to high development cost of titles for PS3, we have decided to switch the platform to which we release our Monster Hunter 3 title."Kotaku

OK, someone in PR at Capcom is probably losing sleep over this right now. If this is the case why didn't they just release it for the PS2 or the PSP? After all, those consoles have to be even CHEAPER to develop games on. I just can't believe he said that...

Please Stop the War Games! Fine for Matthew Broderick, bad for 21st Century!

As I look over the games coming out in the next year or so; I wonder if I'm the only one that notices the very large number of games about war and about fighting in wars. I don't want to go to war, do you? I don't believe in killing people to make a political point, do you? Wars are often fought for reasons that no one is readily willing to admit or explain to the people who are fighting or the people who are paying. I'm not here to talk about my politics or some religious beliefs that I may or may not have.

What I am here to say, is that if you repeatedly play games where all your doing is killing people who look like adversaries that either historically or currently we are fighting. In games like Quake Wars or Halo you are just fighting the other, the aliens. No problem here, I know that psychologically this might be just as bad for us as playing a game where we are killing realistic looking people in a realistic setting. But it seems like there is a pretty fine line between action movie and war movie when it comes to video games.

In games like Halo or Quake Wars there is at least the ability to pretend that it is all a movie or science fiction novel. But in a game like Call of Duty or Medal of Honor there is really nothing separating the reality from the gamer's mind. Unlike games like Doom or Quake; I honestly believe that games where you are killing realistic enemies are much worse. There certainly seems that there is a much more direct connection between who we consider to be the enemy.

Worse than all of this however, is the absolute unimaginative blundering that is passing for a war game now a days. Call of Duty 3 was a rehash of Call of Duty 2 and Medal of Honor: Airbourne was a rehash of both COD 2 and 3. Minus the parachuting of course. Company of Heroes, while a well designed RTS could have just as easily been set in space or on some alien planet. Did WW2 really have an integral part in the gameplay of this game. Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare is probably the most realistic and exciting FPS out there. It will be out in November and it looks to be the best thing since sliced bread. Problem is that the game's character models are, photorealistic. The enemies are supposed to be Russian but they look a lot like Middle Eastern people. I certainly couldn't comment on the story considering it hasn't been released yet; but the graphics really sell this game as real; maybe too real.

This certainly wouldn't be an issue if it wasn't coming out in a year of first person shooters and right before a second year that seems loaded with them as well. Besides this, there is no shortage of World War 2 games out there. Combining all of this together, it is really hard to stomach anything like Call of Duty, America's Army, Company of Heroes, Medal of Honor: Airborne, Hour of Victory, Medal of Honor: Heroes 2, and of course the upcoming Brothers in Arms: Hell's Highway.
There is no doubt that games like: Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter 2, Rainbow Six Vegas, Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, and Counter Strike: Source are some of the best First Person Shooter titles the industry has ever seen.
The only problem with these games is the fact that are SO MANY OF THEM. The games have glutted the market. Ubisoft is one of the biggest developers and publishers of video games in the world. They could have certainly consolidated their efforts into one title and made the the best tactical first person shooter, ever. They chose rather to try and make two.

I'm certainly not asking anyone to give up their favorite game. Just think a little about what it is you are actually doing when you are playing them and why you are doing it. Is there some good story basis for why you are doing these things or is it just random killing in the warzone. Also, if you find the images or nationalities of the people you are shooting in these games disturbing; please contact the developers. Because this is the only way they are going to stop doing these kinds of games. Finally, PLEASE don't buy anymore WW2 games. Please let these die the death they so richly deserve. There is truly no reason to reinvent the wheel and there is truly no reason to recreate a game that was done perfectly by Call of Duty 2 and Company of Heroes.

Sony's 40GB Hardware SKU, a different take!

Sony has confirmed their 40GB harddrive model for only 399 Euros. Read all about it here.
All of this stuff has made a lot of waves in the news lately and it seems like Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo are still trying to perpetuate their launch year excitement by continuously announcing new SKUs and special editions of old SKUs with minor tweaks. The real problem with Sony especially doing this; is that it seems as though they STILL haven't figured out why their console isn't selling. The fact that the PSP was selling at $249 and it had practically nothing good running on it was testament to the fact that as long as a system has a descent number of games; people will buy it.
Oh yeah, I said it, "A DESCENT NUMBER OF GAMES!" I didn't say good games did I? No, I didn't. Sony needs to stop worrying about hardware on the retail side and send all their hardware monkeys out to developers to ensure that their third and first party developers make their release dates and use the full power of the system.
If that isn't enough to keep them busy, perhaps pushing HOME through it's paces and getting all the promised content from two years ago going on the service. Better still perhaps making the Playstation Network Store a descent place, rather than something that looks like it was designed and put up on the same day.
Doing all these expensive refits for new SKUs only confuses potential consumers and generally makes people who were early adopters angry. I know there are only about 1,000(joking) of them so maybe Sony doesn't care too much but...
With all the Halo news and hype lately; Sony would do well to get going on it's own marketing campaign for whatever it thinks will be out this holiday season. Since so many big titles are getting pushed back; they should probably start hyping Folklore and Ratchet and Clank: Future Tools of Destruction. Not on late night cable, but on primetime. Like during Chuck, Heroes, or CSI?
Sony doesn't need new hardware, what they need is some new software!

Playstation the Official Magazine to Begin publication in November

It's hard to believe that Official Playstation Magazine has been dead and gone from us a whole year. It used to be published by Ziff Davis and they axed the magazine due to the lagging sales. Now Future and Sony are getting together to relaunch Playstation: the Official Magazine. This magazine will strangely enough be launching in November. How ironic... Anyway, the worst part of this is that the current PSM publication can barely fill a magazine with the lack games that Sony has been not coming out with. I'm not sure why this warrants yet another magazine.
This is especially strange because in Europe, where the PS3 is more popular; just a few months ago it was reported that these Sony only publications are bleeding money, Therefore it is truly a strange thing to see Sony partnering with Future(the guys bleeding money in Europe), to come out with an American magazine.
Good luck, hopefully the writing will be better than that found in the Official XBOX Magazine. Where is the Official Nintendo magazine? They could really use one.

Bring me the Head of Mickey Mouse! Kingdom Hearts gets new games!

"GS '07: Three new Kingdom Hearts games coming
Square Enix and Disney team up again to bring their crossover role-playing franchise to portable platforms.

TOKYO--With the Tokyo Game Show kicking off, Square Enix has revealed it is working on three more installments of the popular role-playing game series Kingdom Hearts, bringing the franchise to the DS, PlayStation Portable, and mobile phones. Although the three titles are so far only confirmed for release in Japan, the company assures its western fans of the series that "release in other territories will be determined at a later date."

The first game, Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days brings the Disney and Square Enix worlds to the Nintendo DS, and will feature characters Roxas and Axel in both single-player and multiplayer missions. The role-playing game will be directed by Tetsuya Nomura and Tomohiro Hasegawa. A date has not yet been set for the game's release in any region.

The second game is called Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep, and will be coming to the PlayStation Portable. Birth by Sleep will tell the story of three new characters, all of whom are keyblade apprentices in search of a missing keyblade master. Tetsuya Nomura and Tai Yasue are co-directing the title.

The third title is a mobile game called Kingdom Hearts Coded, and is set after the events of the first Kingdom Hearts game. Jiminy Cricket returns to Disney Castle to write in his journal, where he finds a mysterious message that he cannot trace. This marks the beginning of a new quest for a virtual Sora. The mobile phone models and carriers which will support the game have not yet been announced.

The first Kingdom Hearts game was released in 2002 in a collaboration between Square Enix and Disney Interactive Studios, and installments of the series have since shifted 11 million copies on the PlayStation 2 and Game Boy Advance."Gamespot...

What bothers me about all this is that it seems that the people making Kingdom Hearts should be focusing all their efforts on making Kingdom Hearts 3 instead of these portable titles. The fact that KH 3, doesn't sound like it's coming out until the end of the world; and this news doesn't exactly change that encouraging idea. Square seems so concerned about their Final Fantasy franchise that they seem to be allowing both their Dragon Quest and Kingdom Hearts franchises to lounge in the world of the portable. Which is fine except that as long as they are stuck on the Wii, DS, and PSP their revenue streams are guaranteed but it is also guaranteed that we won't be seeing next generation versions of these games.
